- Glaucoma costs U.S. health care system an estimated $2.5 billion annually
- $1.9 billion direct costs and $600 million indirect costs
- 120,000 Americans are blind from glaucoma

Diabetic Retinopathy
- Leading cause of blindness in the U.S. among working age adults
- Estimated 21 million people with diabetes, increasing 7% per year
- Only 45% have been examined for DR
- 5.3 million people have been diagnosed with DR in the U.S.
- Diabetes related blindness costs exceed $3.8 billion a year
- 12,000 – 39,000 new cases of blindness per year, 90% preventable
